TOPIC: ISSUE128 - "It is often asserted that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. In reality, however, formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free."

We are fortunate to survive through the long and tough history. It is education that allows us to pass down our knowledge gained through hard work and imaginative thinking to the next generation. Only through education can we become a full man with good habits to think independently and  freely, and simultaneouosly a man of effective action.

With the purpose mentioned above, we have been making our endless efforts through the infinate history to advance education methods and to establish a well-conducted system to make students learn better. Famous educators and their collegues have innovated and are innovating a myraid of ways of effective educating. It is believed that an effective educating consists of some factors such as letting students think in their own way, allowing them to act according to their mind, offering them opportunities to investgate into certain problems in which they are interested and making them feel free to challenge those pundits. Only in these ways can the learners gain not only knowledges but also critical and creative thinking habits which is more important in their whole lives.

The significance of creative thinking, which we all agree, is that when people form that habit, they are likely to become confident in front of problems or even danger and more often than not, they can at last come up with practical ideas to solve those difficulties. Let us here discuss further to search for the real reason of it. It is obvious that a student who used to believe in whatever he hear or see and follow whatever he learned through education will be nervous when faced with situations he has never seen. Trying to copy things done by other people without adding his respective mind will cause a fiasco and many fiascos if he does not change. So it is vital to notice that a free spirit means a lot, at least it can make you different from other people and avoid unnecessary failures.

Today, however, it seems our education system is evolving into one that restrains our minds. Our high schools are telling students to buy referance books which tell them what is right and what is wrong. When they grow older, they are forced by both their parents and the pressure of society to take exams to enter colleges, exams that only allow minds which match the recommended answers "perfectly". Even in higher level, such as colleges and universities, students have few chances to think freely and act in their own way. Although they have the chances to choose whatever courses they want, the courses they choose are limited both in diversities and in the way they are taught. Some teachers and professors hold on to their lecture notes for years and teach the same things to respective individuals. How can a system like this free our mind rather than strict it? Things should be done to ameliorate the situation.

But after all, it is not that simple as our society bring more tension to our livings. An ideal education system need to deal with each students respectively which seems impossible today because most colleges now even lacks teachers to maintain their old education systems, not to mention an ideal system as above. Some experienced teachers are rushing into other field because of low incomes. Pay raise of teachers is recommended, but if it happens, students have to pay more to receive education, a much more amount added to  an existing large one. Moreover, we also need to bring other effective ways of educating, such as sophisticated equipment and advanced managment of education system which cost too much that our government can not afford, these economic pressures are eventually put on the families of each students, which will cause a more erratic social problem.

With all these factors considered, it seems absolutely necessary for us to work together to overcome all these difficulties and to make greater efforts to fulfill the real purpose and reach the final destination of education: To free human spirit to make a creative and a full man.

大学应该要求每一个学生在自己专业课外选修各种学科,因为获得各种学科的知识才是获得真正教育的最好途径。

1.Brainstorming:
什么是truly educated,只学好我们的课程肯定不是真正的受教育.素质教育强调的是全面的发展,培养智商,情商,人文素质,文化修养,爱国主义,艺术细胞等等.立论之前一定要对truly educated 进行定义.而并不是什么都学的就是完全的受教育,在适当的底蕴基础上有一定的专攻才是真正的教育,因为教育不但应该有人文主义的内涵,更需要有实用的价值,教育不可能孤立于物质存在,所以应该在保证自己的工作的基础上谈广度.并不是必须都要学习本领域之外的课程,应该按课程的不同来区分,对人文素质课,那是必须要学,但是其他的理科课程,并不是都适合与一个领域的学生.我们选择一些适合自己去学的课程,这样的好处是防止以后失业,因为好多人今后并不能干自己所学的这一行,而适当的选修课可以使他在社会上更有适应性.其次,选修课可以使我们的思路开阔,借鉴别的学科的思维,工具,方法.再次,选修课(人文方面),使我们的综合素质提高.这才是真正教育.

Great attentions are paid to education nowadays as competetions between people are more and more intense. People are aware of their careers, and they believe a good education would ensure them of a sound pay. But we are ignoring the most important part in education, which is to form a full man, a man with awareness who can know his advantages and shortcomings well, a man with control who can face failure confidently and success calmly and a man with a broad eye who can conmunicate and corporate with other people. And the best way to become truly educated is to receive a broad eduction, which allows students to take courses outside their field.

Educations, especially primary educations throughout the world, although they may differ in the period of time to receive, have something in common, such as students have to attended classes to learn art, sports, history as well as languages, which is a perfect example of broad education. We have to admit that the broad education play an important part in the form of people's charastics, and I strongly recommended this kind education continuing in university. All students in the university, regardless of their major and interests, should take these courses to become a full man. They can know about famous people and important affairs in history class, they can cultivate their ability to appreciate art works and music and they can learn to relax themselves after hard study.These abilities seem to be useless in their careers, but a broad scope of knowledge and a wide range of abilities will give you a prority over your other competetors.

Furthermore, some other courses which students don't learn in their field of study should also be included in educations. It is true that some of these courses outside their field has nothing to do with their study in the field now-- and people used to believe things aren't useful now will always be useless, they will possibly be useful later when students enter the society. As we all know, college undergruates these days have difficulties in finding a satisfing job in their field of study, and some are even forced to work in other feilds. For example, students in telecomunication major of my university last year went to look for jobs with the hope to get jobs in telecomuniction companies only to find that nearly all good and big companies had employed enough last year and have few vancacies with low pay, many of them have to find jobs in other fields. But to my surprise, nearly all students have found their jobs in different fields. One student who I know well told me that he had found a job in a company dealing with electromegnetic devices and he had learned courses relating to that subject in junor, of course courses outside his field. This goes to show that how significant it is to receive courses outside your field.

In addition, some courses outside students' field of study will provide usful information and will be helpful when study in their field. They say that some other courses in other fields are catalysts to their study, as some methods can be used, some ways of thinking can be enlightening, and some can be used as tools to help their study. Just take the example of my major again, when we are in laboratery doing research about digital signal system, we need to use formula and theory in mathmetics, we use computer to aid our designing and we even use some method in software project to help us. (It is important to understand that those method and computer programme we use are not teached in our compulsory courses. )

In sum, to become truly educated, people not only have to lay strong foundations in their field, but also have to take other courses outside their fields. These courses make them more confident, more flexible in their career, and make them to become a full man.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT4 - The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.

"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town-Adams Realty and Fitch Realty-Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."


In the argument, the arguer recommend customers with the aim to sell their home quickly and profitably choose Adams Realty. He makes a comparation of the two company concerning their agent number as well as their revenue last year, also he uses his a example of himself to substentiate his claim.It seems plausible at first glance but not logical after careful consideration.

In the first palce, although the author compares the two company in some aspects, but his comparation ignores some vital parts. He has not consider how large the two are, what are their locations and how are their employees' condition, which includs the employees' education, age and effectiveness. Without listing all of these, we can not make harsh conclusions. Moreover, the existing comparations made by the author seems to be usless. He says that many of  Fitch's 25 emloyees only work part-time, but this does not necessarily mean that their working hours is less than Adams since the author gives no imfomation about working hours of Adams. In addition, in this kind of business, we pay great attention to these employees' ability and their working experience, which are not included in the comparation. More employees of little experience do not work well.

Second, let us consider the author's example of himself carefully. The author make a comparation between Fitch ten years ago with Adams nowadays, this is absolutely unfair for Fitch, and therefore not logical. It is highly possible that the market of estate is small and not profitable those years and the author's home ten years ago mybe totally different from his home today.With a prosperous market of estate and a good house condition, the Adams company can surely sell the author's home quikly. A more fair comparation should be made if the author want to make his claim more founded. He has to cosider the condition of other customers and the condition of different houses.

In the end of the argument, the author recommend customers who want to quickly sell their homes with high prices choose Adams rather than Fitch, based on those logical faults discussed above, this assertion is absolutely too harsh, and also, when a customer want to sell his home, he has to take other factors into consideration, which the author do not mention. The customer will want to make a comparation of the cost of listing his home the two companies, and he also has to consier wether his home condition is suitable for Adams or Fitch. After considering all these factors, it will be possible to make a wise choice between the two companies.

In sum, the author does not investigate the two company thoroughly, and ignore that the market of estate is changing fast. Any wise customers who want to list their homes with either of the two companies will have to make a fair and comprihensive comparation between the two and make a careful decision.

我的观点:(比较特别,因此也比较担心会有不良后果 )
正式教育在某种程度上限制思想与精神是无法避免的.因为教育的主要目的有三个: 净化心灵, 丰富知识, free mind.而前两者不可避免的会限制人的思想与行为.

I agree with the speaker that one of the purposes of education is to free the mind and spirit and formal education restrain them in certain degrees. However, is this limitation a bad phenomenon which goes against the purpose of education? Maybe it is not really the case. In my part, there are three major purposes of education, that is----to beautify the mind and spirit, to enrich the mind and spirit and to free the mind and spirit.

In the first place, the essential purpose of education is to provide guidance for people to pursue kindness and charity. Naturally, people who receive education will be restrained in many situations since moral standards tell them what should be done and what is wrong. A very example of these is the teaching of Confucius. Nearly 2500 years ago when intrigue and vice were rampant in feudal China, the philosopher Confucius taught principles of proper conduct and social relationships that embraced high ethical and moral standards. Also, look back to the history of America, Puritan schoolbooks taught children moral lessons which ask them to obey their parents and not to lose faith in God. All these early educations restrain people’s mind and spirit in the purpose of creating a more harmonious society.

In the second place, provided that purifying the mind and spirit is the first step of education, enriching our knowledge is the second step. To become an all-round person, one has to learn social science as well as physical science. It is inevitable that he or she will be restrained in here and there since every field has its principles and rules. As in social science, we have to accept the scientific discipline that deals with sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, political science, and history. When it comes to physical science, requirement for deeper research calls for us to obey analysis and theoretic of nature and properties of energy and nonliving matter concluded by former scientists. Without the knowledge or " astriction " we can not even continue our research and pursue further learning.

Finally, after moral influence and basic knowledge preparing for further study, the purpose of education comes to stress on freeing our mind and spirit. Instead of stagnating at certain place, our country is undergoing rapid change due to development of society and technology. Advanced political system, new inventions and easier ways to deal with certain problems are resulted from the freedom of people's mind and spirit. Formal education provided by school should not ignore the necessities to cultivate students' creativity and incredulity to authority. Only through this way can we take good advantage of legacy handed down from grand old man and keep on creating our own resplendence.

From what have been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that according to the different purposes of education, restraining on our mind and spirit by formal education is natural and even is required in certain degree. Meanwhile, we must take into account the fact that freeing our mind is of great importance. This “freedom” and “restrain” do not incompatible since “restrain” is our basic need while “freedom” is our ladder to new creation.

一,尊重学生的个人兴趣,才能真正学到东西.
二,学习能力各有不同,有些人连掌握自己的专业都略感吃力,若再被强迫去学习更多的知识,效果不会好.
三,学校应该提供途径使学生有更多的机会射猎更多的知识,但必须给学生充分的自由.

Admittedly, it is a desirable way to help students become educated by taking a variety of courses outside their own field of study. In my opinion, however, students should have the freedom to choose the courses they are interested in and even have the right to decide whether to take them or not.
  
In the first place, I believe that it is the interest of students plays the decisive role in promoting them become educated. People like to devote time and energy in their favorite field and always obtain much knowledge through the process of learning. The interest leads them to study on their own initiative while those who are imposed to do so just accept knowledge but never intend to pursue it by themselves. As a college student, my personal experience is a good example. My university used to require every student to take extra courses. But the fact is some students listened to the professor carefully and took some notes when it was necessary while others always read something unrelated or even fell asleep. To tell the truth, these courses brought many benefits to the students who actually like them but just wasted the time of those sleeping guys.

In the second place, besides personal interest, students' ability of learning must be concerned by university authorities. In other words, universities should not require "every" student to take a variety of courses outside the students' field of study. We can not deny the fact that people's ability of study is totally different. Some students are so smart that it always takes them less time to master new knowledge and leaves much more time for them to learn something else through which they can gradually become educated persons while others have to spend a lot of time and energy on their own filed in order to pass the examinations and catch up other classmates. If this kind of students are obliged to take a variety of courses outside their own field, the aftermath is not difficult for us to imagine--neither their own filed nor the extra courses can be mastered well by the students.

Last but not the least, although enforcing every student to take extra courses is unreasonable, it is universities' responsibility to build a stage for students to enrich their knowledge and experience. What's more, a good university always tries to listen to students, treat different students with distinct methods and spare no effort to find the best way for education. A great deal of measures can be taken to achieve these purposes, such as opening various courses, inviting some scientists or politicians to give lectures in the campus, holding some competitions for students and so on. But only when all the students make their decision freely and regardless of the credit hour they have to achieve, can they learn some from these activities.

In sum, interest is the leading factor of learning which decide the efficiency of study in a great extend(“在很大程度上”是不是这样表达?). Dissimilar students possess different ability and should receive disparate means of education. In addition, it is better for universities to provide multiplicate courses for students but only on the basic of freely choice can they achieve the goal of helping students become educated.

The author cites contrasts on the number of agents, revenue, price of homes and selling-speed to prove that Adams Realty is superior and is able to sell home quickly. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the recommendation.
  
First and the most, the author use his own experience to illustrate that Adams takes less time to sell homes. But the author fail to take into account the fact that situation has been changing during ten years. The needing for house and the market of agent are not the same as 10 years before. What's more, the author did not sell the same house and didn't mention his requirement of price of the two homes as well as each home’s situations. Without these details it is unfair to conclude that Adams can sell home more quickly than Fitch.

Second, the author falsely equates owning more real estate agents and less part-time employees with being superior. But the number of agents and the length of their working-time do not necessarily indicate that the agent can fulfill their work more efficiently and superiorly. On the contrary, perhaps more employees will make the management of realty more complicated and occupy much time to solve internal problems while leaving less time to sell homes. In addition, those who take part-time jobs often deeply in need of money and always work hard to earn more.

Third, the author ignores that there are many reasons to explain why Adams' home-sales are higher. As it known to all, many factors contribute to the price of homes. Such as acreage, internal decoration, location and so forth. Although it seems that average home sales of Adams are much higher than Fitch, it is quite possible that they sell different homes. Maybe Adams primarily sells homes which deserve much while Fitch sells homes whose value is lower.

Finally, the author tries to claim that Adams is superior by last year’s revenue. But the author does not give us any evidence to prove that Adams only deal with the home sale operation. Perhaps Adams has some other commercial activities besides selling homes which contribute to the higher revenue. Even assuming that Adams only sells homes, the mere mention of last year’s evidence hardly suffices to prove that Adams is the better one. It is conceivable that Fitch’ revenue used to be higher than Adams in many years but just became lower in last year due to some accidental events.

To sum up, the author cannot justify his recommendation on the basis of the scant evidence provided in the argument. To bolster it, the author must provide clear evidence ----perhaps by way of a local survey or study----that Adams do sell homes faster that Fitch; Adams’ revenue and prices of houses are higher on the basic that the two realties sell houses at same situation; and more full-time employees help Adams to finish its task more efficient.  

整个周末,最大的成就就是写了三篇作文,但是发现自己进步缓慢 ,可能是底子太薄.

I agree with the proposition that the university should require the students to study other subject beyond the own subject of study .
In the modern you want to get a good job, you should have multiple talent in different fields. We can refer to a poster which is used to recruit new employers, plenty of qualities used to select the applicants are mentioned on it, beside your majority subject, such as your interest, your favorites, your personality, your second-majority. Through these , the company justify whether you are competent to this job. Some applicants may regret  that  they  paid no attention  to the field beyond their own filed and did not concern  developing the interest in  other field . To meet the requirement of your ideal company, you should culture your interest and talent on other field not limited in one field.
To our happiness, all talent mentioned above can be cultured during our university period. The youth, the vigor and the curiosity , all these inner qualities permit us to learn more. Apparently, the courses set by the university which refer to different field will indubitable induce the students to touch the more wide learning space. Where they may find their most interested field , learn the treatment with the problem from the different perspective .And it is not difficult to find that the people who make enormous contributions to his field are often familiar with other field, such as Galileo , a famous physicist and astronomy , were interested in the musical .To the extremely, Aristotle ,a famous philosopher, at the same time , he is a famous educationalist, a famous scientist..
Nevertheless, I would caution that we should balance our major with our other interested field, devote more time to the major, learn in other field in our spare time. Then with a broad education the university provide us, we will not only do better in our major, but also have a good understanding in other field which makes us more knowledgeable and our life more excellent.

我觉得这两周咱们暂时把作业量减少点吧。我现在是分身乏术,要写作文(写一篇得花我好几个小时),还得准备专业课考试,单词每天也不能离手,不知大家情况如何

问大家一个关于argument的问题:
在北美范文里很多的最后一段都是:"To convince me that... the author need to provide
evidence that....."
" To better evaluate the argument, I would need more...."
我总搞不清这两句话在逻辑上的关系,递进??并列???这样写有什么好处啊??

with the high development of modern society, the requirements of talent people become much complicated. It claims that people who has mastered multiple technologies or knowledges are eagerly demanded in today's society. Therefore, it is essential for students to take various of courses that outside their field when they study in universities to perfect themselves.


For the society, the main purpose of education is to create more people with technologies and knowledges which are requisite in the evolvement of modern society. The fashion of learning foreign language is a good example to illustrate this point. There are many people, whose major has nothing to do with foreign language, spend their spare time in goring to the language school to learn foreign language in order to advance their competitive ability with others. Why they do so you may ask, The only answer is society demand so. It can be described in details that China are open now, hence, there are so many people from foreign countries like USA, German and so forth come to China to invest that learning foreign language to communicate with them are indispensable. Besides, computer skill, communite ability and team-work ability are of basic damand for today's talent people. Furthermore, there are much more complicated requirement in different fields which are not as easy as the above basic demand.


For people, to take a variety of courses outside their field can help accelerate the speed of being a talent people that society required. Because different disciplines are closely interrelating with each other. In the history of world evolution, there are many political problems can be described by philosophy perspective, many neurology experiments are set up based on ecnomic models and many famous paintings are according to the physical structures. Therefore, learn more form the outside field, the more topping one can be in his own field, for the outsider knowledge are not only compensating one's lack in his major but also breaking the limitation in one's mind and boarding it.


Nevertheless, I would caution that one dabble in too many disciplines can be his undoing: he learn nothing only waste time actually. The only purpose of studying outside field is to strength the learning of our own major, this is the true education. People can learn many from outside even swift his interest to another field, that is not the problem, however, if one swift all the time that will risk underming the initial purpose. All in all, we have to learn our major deep enough that the outside knowledge can further promote our true education.


To sum up, it is beneficial to learn various courses from outside field both for the society and people self. People should learn their major to a certain deep, therefore, outside knowledge can better advance them. The most important is that to be turely educate, dabble one field is forbidden.
